“Getting one with the universe” seems like a pretty heady goal, but keeping it light is key to getting it right, according to Sarah Edwards in this “I am Clueless” video on meditation.
Believed to have originated in India, meditation is an ancient practice that has spread worldwide. Some eastern religions incorporate meditation, but it can be practiced on a strictly secular basis as well. In fact, meditation has become wildly popular in western societies as people look for ways to cope with stress and other challenges of modern life.
Why meditate?
“Meditation may offer many benefits, such as helping with concentration, relaxation, inner peace, stress reduction and fatigue. . . Research has found that meditation may help reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. When combined with conventional medicine, meditation may improve physical health. For example, some research suggests meditation can help manage symptoms of conditions such as insomnia, heart disease, pain, cancer and digestive problems.” – The Mayo Clinic
Famous people like Richard Gere and Jennifer Aniston are known meditators. “Twenty minutes, you just notice the difference! When I get lazy and don’t get it in, I can feel a difference in the day. So I try to meditate first thing when I wake up,” Aniston said.
No matter where or why or by whom it’s practiced, meditation involves very few rules. All you really need is a quiet space, focused attention and willingness to clear your mind once you realize your thoughts have carried you away.
